Watermelon Tourmaline Jewelry: October's Birthstone, Meaning and Gift Ideas

October has two birthstones: opal and tourmaline. Tourmaline is the newer of the two, added to the official birthstone list in 1952, and it comes in more colors than almost any other gemstone, from pink and green to deep, inky black. I work with two kinds: natural watermelon tourmaline, faceted into beads for necklaces, bracelets, and earrings, and black tourmaline, one of the stones inside my Galaxy crystals.

If you are shopping for an October birthday, or you were born in October and want something more personal than a standard birthstone pendant, this guide explains what tourmaline is, what makes watermelon tourmaline special, what black tourmaline is said to mean, what I honestly believe about stone meanings, and how to wear it.

October's birthstone Jewelry

What Is the October Birthstone?

October has two official birthstones, opal and tourmaline. Opal is the traditional stone, known for its flashes of color. Tourmaline was added in 1952 and gives October birthdays a second option with a much wider range of colors.

The name tourmaline is usually traced to a Sinhalese word meaning a stone of mixed colors, which fits. A single tourmaline crystal can even shift from one color to another along its length.

What Colors Does Tourmaline Come In?

Tourmaline is a family of minerals rather than one stone, so the range is wide:

  • Black tourmaline (schorl): the most common variety, deep black with a glassy surface
  • Pink and red tourmaline (rubellite): the most popular choice for October birthstone jewelry
  • Green tourmaline: from soft mint to deep forest green
  • Blue tourmaline (indicolite): rare and highly prized
  • Watermelon tourmaline: pink and green in a single stone

Pink gets most of the attention in birthstone guides. Watermelon tourmaline gives you pink and green in one stone, which is why it is my favorite for October birthdays.

What Is Watermelon Tourmaline?

Watermelon tourmaline gets its name from the way it grows: pink at the heart of the crystal and green toward the outside, like the inside and rind of a watermelon. When the stone is faceted into small beads, each bead carries its own part of that gradient, so you see soft pinks melting into cool greens along the strand. No two strands are ever exactly alike.

It is unquestionably a color pop, but the mix of cool green and warm pink, set with 14k gold filled, means it does not belong to one season. It works in October, and it works just as well in spring.

What Does Watermelon Tourmaline Mean?

Watermelon tourmaline is often associated with balance and the heart: pink and green growing together in one stone are read as love and growth side by side. As with every stone, I see that meaning as a reminder you choose, not a power the stone holds. If pink and green together stand for something in her life, the piece will remind her of it every time she wears it.

What Does Black Tourmaline Mean?

Black tourmaline is traditionally associated with protection and grounding. In crystal traditions it is described as a stone that absorbs negative energy and helps the wearer feel steady and centered. That is why you often see it recommended for stressful seasons, new jobs, or anyone who wants a reminder to stay calm and grounded.

Do Gemstones Really Have Powers? What I Believe

I will be honest with you, because I think you deserve a straight answer from the person who sets these stones by hand.

I do not believe a gemstone has power over a person, their personality, or their luck. I believe the power is in our own mind, our mood, and our actions.

But I do think meaning matters, and I think it can be very powerful. If someone chooses a stone because it stands for protection, calm, or courage, then every time she looks at it or touches it, she is reminded of that intention. And a reminder, repeated every day, can change what she chooses to do next. The stone does not do the work. It reminds you that you can.

That is how I think about birthstone jewelry too. It is not a charm. It is a small, beautiful object that carries a story you chose for yourself.

Why I Use Black Tourmaline in My Galaxy Crystals

My Galaxy Collection crystals are made from a combination of crushed stones, including pyrite, black tourmaline, obsidian, and kyanite, layered with Swarovski crystals. Every crystal is arranged by hand, so no two are ever exactly alike.

Black tourmaline is the stone that gives them depth. The galaxy crystal is very textured: the sparkle comes from many stones and crystals sitting at different levels. The crushed black tourmaline is slightly see-through, and that small amount of transparency creates an illusion of dimension, as if you are looking into the crystal rather than at its surface.

This is also why the most common thing clients tell me is that the Galaxy pieces look better in real life. A flat photo cannot show that depth. You only see it when the piece moves in the light, on your own hand.

Tourmaline Jewelry Gift Ideas for October Birthdays

None of these need a ring size, which makes them easy gifts.

For a classic birthstone gift

The Watermelon Tourmaline Beaded Necklace is a strand of natural faceted watermelon tourmaline, about 3mm each, with three small cubic zirconia accents and 14k gold filled findings. It comes in 16, 18, or 20 inches, each with a 1 inch extender, and custom lengths are available if you leave a note at checkout.

For someone who stacks bracelets

The Watermelon Tourmaline Bracelet pairs the same faceted stones with 14k gold filled beads. It measures 6.5 inches with an extender, so it fits most wrists without measuring.

For an earring lover

The Watermelon Tourmaline Earrings have about a 1 inch drop with a CZ at the base: enough movement to catch the light, light enough to wear all day. Together, the necklace and earrings make an easy October birthday set.

Black Tourmaline Gift Ideas

One honest note: my Galaxy pieces are a blend of stones, not a single tourmaline gemstone. If she loves deep, dark, dimensional pieces with real black tourmaline inside, these are where I would start.

For her first statement ring

The Statement Oval Galaxy Ring is the piece most people fall for first. It has the largest crystal, so it shows the most depth and movement. It is available in 14k gold filled or sterling silver.

For someone who prefers smaller pieces

The Oval Galaxy Ring and the Tiny Oval Galaxy Ring carry the same crystal at a quieter scale, and both are easy to stack with plain bands.

For a gift without a ring size

The Statement Oval Galaxy Necklace and the Oval Dangling Galaxy Earrings are the easiest choices when you do not know her ring size. They also pair well together as a set.

How to Wear Tourmaline Jewelry

Watermelon tourmaline is easier to wear than it looks. Let it be the one colorful piece against cream, white, gray, navy, or denim, and it reads intentional rather than loud. It layers well with a plain gold chain.

Black reads as a neutral, so a black tourmaline piece goes with even more of a wardrobe:

  • With black: a galaxy ring with a black sweater or dress looks rich and intentional, and the crystal's depth stands out against the solid color.
  • With denim and white: the contrast makes the crystal the focal point of a simple outfit.
  • With fall colors: camel, rust, olive, and burgundy all work, especially in 14k gold filled.
  • In a stack: let the galaxy ring be the anchor and keep the bands around it simple. My guide on how to stack rings without it looking messy walks through it.

How to Care for Tourmaline Jewelry

Tourmaline is a hard gemstone, but a beaded strand still deserves some care: take it off for swimming, the gym, and heavy cleaning, and store it flat so the beads do not tangle.

In my Galaxy pieces, the crushed stones are sealed under a glass-like resin that is UV stable, so it does not yellow, and its clarity does not change over time. Like any polished surface, it can be scratched if it rubs against something rough.

  • Take it off for the gym, gardening, and heavy cleaning.
  • Washing your hands while wearing it is fine, and it actually helps by removing lotion and oil buildup.
  • Store it on its own so it does not knock against other pieces.

And if the crystal does get scratched, email me. I will restore it, anytime. For more detail, see the Jewelry Cleaning & Care Guide.
