Necklaces
Handmade pendant necklaces, dainty chains, and layering pieces all made in Kate's Florida studio with 14k gold filled and sterling silver chains.
The Kate Koel necklaces collection is the broadest category on the site and deliberately so. Here you’ll find a gold foil shimmer pendant alongside a hexagon howlite stone, a whisper-thin herringbone chain alongside a bold paperclip link, an initial disc beside a Lucky charm. That range is intentional. Whether you’re shopping for yourself or choosing a unique handmade necklace as a gift, this is the starting point.
Pendant frames are gold-plated brass, nickel and lead free. Choose from crushed gemstone pendants, shimmer foil crystals, real pressed flowers, galaxy pyrite, mother of pearl, personalized initial tags, and plain chains in every length. Over 75 styles, $30–$195.
What separates Kate Koel necklaces from mass-produced chain jewelry is the sequence of decisions made on each individual piece before it ships: the chain length is cut to spec, the clasp is soldered rather than crimped, the stone or pendant is set by hand, and the whole piece is checked against quality by the same person who made it. Unlike fashion costume jewelry stamped in batches of thousands, every necklace here is a single production run made to your order, in our Florida studio, in 1–3 weeks.
Frequently asked questions
Most necklaces use a two-material system: pendant frames are made of gold-plated brass, nickel and lead free. Chains, jump rings, and findings are made of 14k gold filled with a solid layer of real gold mechanically bonded to the metal, which is far more durable and skin friendly than standard gold plated. Sterling silver (925) is available on many styles as an alternative. Silver pendant frames use rhodium-plated or heavy-plated brass, also nickel free. If you have sensitive skin, both the nickel-free frames and the 14k gold filled chains are designed with you in mind.
Gold plated uses a very thin layer of gold on the surface usually less than 0.5 microns which fades and
tarnishes with regular wear. Gold filled is regulated by the U.S. government and must contain at least 5% real
gold by weight, mechanically bonded to the base metal. In practice, gold filled keeps its color for years of daily wear, through sweat, water, and friction. It's the material most independent artisan jewelers use when they want a piece to last. All of Kate's chains and findings are 14k gold filled, not plated.
Each pendant crystal is handmade by Kate individually. She pours a clear, glass-like resin into a nickel-free
brass frame and encapsulates one of several materials inside: crushed semi-precious gemstones (malachite,
lapis lazuli, abalone, garnet, rhodonite, and others), metallic shimmer foils (gold, silver, copper leaf), real dried pressed flowers (Queen Anne's Lace), galaxy-effect crushed pyrite with Swarovski crystals, or Mother of Pearl shimmer. Because each crystal is made by hand and uses natural materials, no two pendants are exactly alike.

How to Layer Necklaces Without Tangling
Layering necklaces without tangling comes down to three variables: chain style, length separation, and clasp placement.
Chain style is the most important factor. Flat chains herringbone chain, bar link chain, paperclip chain lie in a single plane and tend to stay separate naturally. Rope and cable chains move more freely and are more likely to intertwine with other links. For tangle-free stacking, mix a flat chain as the shortest layer with a cable or pendant necklace at a longer length below it.
Length separation of at least 2 inches between each necklace prevents the chains from occupying the same physical space. A 16” choker-adjacent piece, an 18” short princess pendant, and a 22” matinee chain will each sit on a distinct visual tier. If your lengths are less than 1” apart, the chains will crowd and tangle.
Clasp placement affects tangle risk too. Spring ring clasps are slightly smaller and less likely to catch on adjacent lobster clasps when you are moving. If you wear multiple lobster clasps in a layered set, position them at slightly different points around your neck so they don’t hook each other.
The Kate Koel Delicate Herringbone Chain Necklace is specifically built as a tangle-resistant base layer: its flat herringbone link lies flat against the skin and creates a clean foundation for a longer pendant necklace above or below it.
Gold-Filled vs Gold-Plated vs Sterling Silver: A Guide for Necklaces
Gold-filled, gold-plated, and sterling silver are the three metal bases most commonly used in handmade necklaces and they are not interchangeable in terms of durability, skin safety, or long-term wear.
14k gold-filled: A thick layer of 14k gold mechanically bonded to a base metal core legally required to contain at least 5% gold by weight. Gold-filled chains and clasps are significantly more durable than gold-plated equivalents and are appropriate for daily wear over years. Can you shower with a gold-filled necklace? Occasional contact with water will not damage a gold-filled chain, but prolonged exposure to chlorine (pools) and salt water (ocean) will degrade the bond over time. Remove before swimming.
Gold-plated brass: A thin electroplated layer of gold over a brass base. The plate is thinner than gold-filled and will wear through faster under friction particularly at clasp points and where the chain rests against skin. Gold-plated necklaces are wearable for years with proper care (remove before showering, swimming, or applying lotion), but they are not equivalent to gold-filled for longevity. Kate Koel pendant frames use gold-plated brass; the chain itself uses gold-filled or sterling silver for durability at the friction points.
Sterling silver: 92.5% pure silver with 7.5% alloy for hardness. Tarnishes with exposure to air and moisture (this is a surface reaction not damage), but polishes back easily. Sterling silver necklaces are a good choice for people who prefer cool-toned metals or have sensitivities to brass alloys. How do you keep silver necklaces from tarnishing? Read our Blog post. Store in an airtight pouch when not wearing, and wipe with a soft dry cloth after each wear. Avoid perfume, lotion, and hairspray on the chain.
Rhodium-plated brass: A silver-toned finish on brass, using rhodium (a platinum-group metal) as the plating. More tarnish-resistant than unplated brass; used by Kate Koel as the cool-toned alternative to gold-plated frames on pendant pieces.

14k Gold Filled Chains & Gold-Plated Brass Frames | Built to Last
Every pendant crystal is handmade by Kate she pours resin into each frame individually, capturing crushed gemstones, real dried pressed flowers, shimmer foils, or galaxy-like pyrite inside a glass-clear setting. No two crystals are exactly alike. The pendant frames are made of gold-plated brass, nickel and lead free. Chains and findings are 14k gold filled not gold plated. Gold filled has a solid layer of real gold
mechanically bonded to the metal, meaning it keeps its color through daily wear, sweat, and water. Sterling silver is available on many styles. Both options are safe for sensitive skin.
Gemstone Pendants, Pressed Flower Necklaces & Shimmer Foil Styles
The pendant shapes span hexagon, oval, round, diamond, bar, heart, and teardrop — each in multiple fill options. The gemstone pendants come in malachite, lapis lazuli, abalone shell, ruby garnet, white howlite, pink rhodonite, and unakite, among others. The shimmer foil pendants feature color named finishes: Black Gold, Ice, Vanilla Sky, Forest, Sakura, and Bright Blue Gold. The pressed flower pendants hold real dried Queen Anne’s Lace flowers, some with violet hues from a layer of Mother of Pearl shimmer underneath. The
galaxy pendants use crushed pyrite and Swarovski crystals on a deep dark ground.
Dainty Layering Chains, Initial Necklaces & Charm Necklaces
Beyond the pendant styles, the collection includes plain chains for layering paperclip, herringbone, anchor mariner, round link, and bar link in 14k gold filled available in multiple lengths from 16 to 28 inches. These work beautifully on their own or stacked with pendant necklaces. Personalized options include the Initial Tag Pendant and Bubble Tag Pendant in 14k gold filled or sterling silver, and the Initial Necklace with Swarovski crystals. The Floral Charm Necklace can be customized with an initial and text charm.
