Long before ruby became a popular choice for a birthday ring, anniversary gift, or statement piece, people were captivated by its extraordinary red color.

Ruby is the red variety of the mineral corundum. Its color comes from chromium within the stone, producing shades that can range from vivid raspberry and crimson to deep wine red.

Without modern gemology to explain why the stone looked the way it did, ancient cultures connected ruby’s intense color with the most powerful things they understood:

How Did Ruby Become July’s Birthstone?

Many people assume that the modern birthstone calendar has existed unchanged for thousands of years.

The real history is more complicated.

Ancient religious texts, astrology, regional traditions, gem trading, and cultural folklore all contributed to the way people connected particular stones with identity and time.

One frequently mentioned origin is the Breastplate of Aaron described in the Book of Exodus. It contained twelve stones representing the twelve tribes of Israel. Centuries later, writers and scholars attempted to connect groups of twelve gemstones with zodiac signs and, eventually, the twelve months of the year.

However, the modern month-by-month birthstone list used in the United States is much more recent.

The American National Retail Jewelers Association, now known as Jewelers of America, standardized an official birthstone list in 1912. Ruby was assigned to July.

That means the stories surrounding ruby are ancient, while the familiar modern tradition of calling ruby the July birthstone is comparatively recent.

A July ruby ring therefore carries two layers of history:

I believe you do.

If simply wearing a particular stone guaranteed prosperity, health, courage, or fulfillment, then every person who mined, transported, cut, sorted, or worked beside that material would receive those benefits automatically.

That is clearly not how life works.

A ruby cannot take action for you.

It cannot make a difficult decision, begin the frightening project, leave the wrong situation, build the business, repair the relationship, or get back up after disappointment.

But a ruby ring can remind you why you decided to take those actions.

That distinction matters to me.

Jewelry Does Not Change Who You Are

After years of making jewelry, I have come to believe something much more meaningful than gemstone folklore:

Jewelry does not change who you are.

It reminds you who you want to be.

Absolutely.

I work with genuine crushed ruby fragments.

The fragments are arranged by hand inside a defined shape and captured beneath clear, glass-like resin. Because the pieces vary in size, texture, color, and position, every finished surface reflects light differently.

Some areas appear densely crimson. Others produce brighter red flashes. The natural fragments create visual depth that cannot be duplicated with one flat layer of synthetic color.
